Abstract:

This session will present a number of models for growing faculty involvement in alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) prevention efforts in institutions of higher education. The relationship of prevention to curriculum and strategies of faculty-driven curriculum infusion will be discussed. A number of formal curricular structures that can facilitate the growth of ATOD content in the curriculum will also be explored with conference participants. In addition, models for faculty research contributions that can bring both scholarly recognition and grant funding opportunities to institutions that support such involvement will be described. Experiences from the United States Department of Education model program at Hobart and William Smith Colleges will be presented as an example of how these strategies can be implemented on a college campus. Prevention outcomes will be shared.
